Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them floated into the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations affecting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend passed through the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and near the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a method that is highly susceptible to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that this activity become unprofitable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
